Madison is working at B&B Meats, Emily is working at the Pawnee County Health Department, and Jaicee is working at Golden Rule Preschool. Stop by and tell them "hi!"
Miss Johnson's Career and Community Connections class has jumped right into hands-on career learning! The first 6 weeks were filled with a crash course on career exploration, the job search, and securing a job. Juniors Emily Herrman, Madison Erway, and Jaicee Walker have done a fantastic job jumping into the world of work! The students worked on Resumes, cover letters, interviews, career exploration and research, goal setting, and job application. Now that they "got the job" they are going to work everyday for real-world experience.

Cupcake Wars!
The Nutrition and Wellness class had the opportunity to put their skills to the test in their very own version of Cupcake Wars! The students worked together to develop their own creations. Judging was based on 3 categories: creativity, taste, and presentation. The teams were judged by 3 wonderful faculty and staff volunteers to crown Katie, Kiah, and Cathleen's group the Cupcake Wars Winners! From 2nd Grade to High School!
Miss Johnson's Human Growth and Development class got some hands-on experience working with children when we went to Mrs. Hatfield's 2nd grade classroom. The 2nd graders got to do a Christmas craft with the High School kids and the high schoolers put their new knowledge to the test working with the younger students. A fun time was had by all and the high schoolers even asked if they could go back the next week! Miss Johnson's class, along with students from Mr. Junker's and Ms. Novotny's classes had the opportunity to put their skills to the test by competing in Dual Survivor Day at Fort Larned National Historic Site. The students used a variety of skills to compete in tasks necessary to survive during the 1800's, just like the soldiers at Fort Larned! The tasks included saddling a horse, rescuing a lost soldier, creating a meal from scratch, doing laundry (no washing machines!), and starting a fire, just to name a few! From math skills to everyday life skills, the kids were challenged to survive like they would have on the Prairie (and learn a thing or two about how different we have it today!).
North Central Kansas Technical College
Miss Johnson's FACS classes and Mr. Norris's Industrial Arts classes visited NCK Tech's Fall Showcase day to explore all the options offered at NCK Tech. Students had the opportunity to get hands-on experience in culinary arts, carpentry, nursing, pharmacy tech, welding, and TONS more! A fantastic experience and wonderful secondary education option, for more information, please visit their website at https://www.ncktc.edu/. Upcoming Field Trip Information
I have the pleasure to share a couple exciting learning opportunities with your student. The FACS class that your student is enrolled in will be taking advantage of two different opportunities during the week of Nov. 1st. The first opportunity will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 3rd. The FACS and Industrial Arts classes will be traveling to Hays to visit the North Central Kansas Technical College for their Fall Showcase Day. The students will have the opportunity to explore the post-secondary education options available at NCK Tech. The students will meet at 7:20 AM, by the band room, for a 7:30 departure. The bus will return by the end of school at 3:15 PM. There is no cost to the student for this trip (lunch will be provided). Please visit the NCK Tech Website for more information at https://www.ncktc.edu/. The second opportunity will take place Friday, Nov. 6th (with alternate date Nov. 10th if the weather does not cooperate). The American History, FACS, and pre-Algebra classes will be participating in Dual Survivor - Man vs. Prairie, hosted by Fort Larned. The students will participate in activities such as making soap, cooking a meal, washing clothes, patrolling the Fort grounds, rescuing a lost soldier, and building/discovering a Plains Indian Camp. The bus will depart at 8:15 AM and will return before the end of the school day at 3:15 PM. There is no cost to the student for this opportunity, however, the student WILL need to bring a sack lunch. For each opportunity, the students will miss the entirety of their other classes on that day. Because of this, the students will be responsible for meeting with their other teachers to get any makeup work they will miss before we leave. If any student feels uncomfortable participating in the trip for any reason (does not want to miss other classes, etc.), they will be allowed to stay at school and will complete an alternate assignment during their FACS class time. Please have your student talk with me about any questions or concerns they may have and I will be happy to help. I am so excited to be able to share these opportunities with your students! I believe the students will greatly benefit from both of these activities. Please sign and return the permission forms to me by Wednesday, October 28th. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me by phone at the High School at 285-2151 or by e-mail at [email protected]. Human Growth and Development
Our human growth and development class had tons of hands-on experience this last semester! From pregnancy simulation with the empathy bellies, to how to properly heat a bottle (not just in the microwave!), the students were able to enhance their learning experience and even had some fun in the meantime. First Aid and CPR
The FACS classes participated in informational presentations by the Larned EMS on Tuesday, Nov. 13th. Presentations reviewed basic first aid, CPR, and other information about what to do in a compromising health situation. The students learned a lot throughout the day and will put this information to good use out in the real world. A big thank you to Gary Hartman, Misty, Landon, and Jenny for helping us out! Career and Life Planning - Mock Interviews
Interviewing for Success The students in Jacque Johnson’s Career and Life Planning class at Larned High School had a chance to look to the future and work on their interviewing skills on Tuesday and Wednesday. The students concluded a unit on career exploration and preparation by participating in mock interviews with local community professionals. After working through the unit, which included writing resumes and cover letters, discussing interview dress and etiquette, and even common interview questions, the students were able to put their skills to the test in a real interview experience. With the help of June Barger, Jeanette Johnson, Brenda Langdon, Doug Lawson, Wendy Leiker, and David Zecha, the students practiced their interviewing skills, gained valuable experience, and caught a glimpse of what the future job search will entail. Although the students worked to prepare for their future job-search in class, nothing compares to the real-life experience of jumping into an interview. The students had a chance to think on their feet and really practice their interview skills. After the interviews, the students reflected on their experience. Many said that the interview made them surprisingly nervous, but they were happy to have the chance to practice in a safe, learning environment. Each of the professionals had the opportunity to provide feedback and help to coach the students for future success. We are lucky to have such caring and talented professionals in our community that are willing to spend time coaching and guiding our young adults. |
