Mrs. Wasinger's Human Growth and Development class took a hands-on approach when they donned the empathy bellies in class. Students were able to feel some of the physical changes that an expectant mother might feel during her pregnancy.

As the year comes to a close, Miss Johnson's classes have more in store! The next few weeks will include the Chemistry of Cooking, a unit about the science behind our kitchen adventures. Mrs. Fitzpatrick's class will pair up with Miss Johnson's classes to learn about kitchen chemistry, cook up a few labs, and apply their findings! Then, it's PIZZA TIME! The students will finish with a final Pizza Cook Off! The students will show off their skills and compete against their classmates to make the best pizza creation. May the best Chef win!
Who knew Massage Therapy has so many health and wellness benefits!? Jessi Johnson presented to Miss Johnson's classes on the benefits of massage and then the students got to experience some of those benefits! The students learned about the benefits, from stress and anxiety relief to help with Rheumatoid Arthritis and Cancer treatment. Then, the students did some stretching to warm up those muscles and paired up to learn some hand massage techniques. Some of those techniques might come in handy during finals week!
The Rangers and Volunteers from Fort Larned National Historic Site were gracious enough to host students from Mrs. Morse and Miss Johnson's classes on Thursday, April 21st. The students stepped back in time to make hard tack (a cracker-type biscuit the soldiers ate to sustain them while out in the field), churn butter, and bake bread in authentic wood burning ovens. The students were able to get hands-on experience after comparing modern kitchen amenities to kitchen innovations throughout history. While at the Fort, the students also learned about the difference in nutrition and available food sources, observed a talk about the archaeology at the Fort, and watched a blacksmith demonstration. Thank you, Ellen and staff, for a great day!
The Larned Emergency Medical Professionals visited Miss Johnson's class on Friday to present on general First Aid and Safety. The EMT's went over everything from general safety, first aid kits, and what to do in emergency situations. The students can now be confident in their skills when faced with everything from a cut, diabetes, recognizing a stroke, and giving lay man's CPR (to the tune of Staying Alive by the BeeGees!).
Miss Johnson's class met up with Mr. Norris (our Industrial Arts teacher) for a crash course on basic car care and maintenance on Thursday afternoon. Mr. Norris went through those real-world, need to know things about owning a car with the class. The class learned where to find the dipstick to check the oil in a car, how to check tire pressure, how to change a tire, how to check tire treads, and how to jump a car when the battery dies. As the kids hit the road, this mini-lesson was a great experience! A big THANK YOU to Mr. Norris for taking time to host us!
Dear Parents,
I have the pleasure to share an exciting learning opportunity with your student. The FACS class that your student is enrolled in will be taking advantage of a trip to Fort Larned to bake bread in the ovens, just like the soldiers would have used in the 1800’s, and get a taste of how nutrition and daily life has changed through the years. This opportunity will take place on Thursday, April 21st. The FACS classes and Mrs. Morse’s classes will be traveling to the Fort just after seminar. We will load the bus at 8:30 and will start our program at the Fort at 8:45. The students will meet in their respective teacher’s classroom to check in before loading the bus in the South Parking Lot. The bus will return to the high school by the end of 3rd Block at 1:30. The students will then finish their day in their 4th block classes. There is no cost to the student for this trip, however, we do ask that each student bring their own sack lunch. For this opportunity, the students will miss most of their other classes on that day. Because of this, the students will be responsible for meeting with their other teachers to get any makeup work they will miss before we leave. If any student feels uncomfortable participating in the trip for any reason (does not want to miss other classes, etc.), they will be allowed to stay at school and will complete an alternate assignment during their FACS class time. Please have your student talk with me about any questions or concerns they may have and I will be happy to help. I am so excited to be able to share this opportunity with your students! Please sign and return the attached form to me by Friday, April 15th. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me by phone at the High School at 285-2151 or by e-mail at [email protected]. Field trip information as well as other updates about the FACS classroom is also available on my website at jjohnsonfacs.weebly.com. Thank you! Jacque Johnson LHS FACS Teacher Miss Johnson's 2nd and 3rd Block Nutrition and Wellness classes did a wonderful job catering the recent Regional Music Festival hospitality room. The students made everything from breakfast casserole, cinnamon roll french toast, and quiche to lasagna, snack mixes, trifle, and more! The classes had rave reviews and all workers left the day full and happy!
