The Rangers and Volunteers from Fort Larned National Historic Site were gracious enough to host students from Mrs. Morse and Miss Johnson's classes on Thursday, April 21st. The students stepped back in time to make hard tack (a cracker-type biscuit the soldiers ate to sustain them while out in the field), churn butter, and bake bread in authentic wood burning ovens. The students were able to get hands-on experience after comparing modern kitchen amenities to kitchen innovations throughout history. While at the Fort, the students also learned about the difference in nutrition and available food sources, observed a talk about the archaeology at the Fort, and watched a blacksmith demonstration. Thank you, Ellen and staff, for a great day!
